Walt Disney World Transportation System

Eight Great Transportation Hacks

  1. I believe one of the biggest misconceptions about Walt Disney World is how massive it is. Spanning over 25,000 acres—roughly the size of San Francisco—Disney World is not your average theme park. It’s a vast entertainment complex with four theme parks, two water parks, more than 25 resort hotels, golf courses, and a shopping/entertainment district (Disney Springs)This immense scale is exactly why Disney’s complimentary transportation system exists—and why understanding how to navigate it can save you time, energy, and frustration. Let’s learn how to navigate Disney’s Wheels, Waves, and Rails.

  2. Buses: Buses/shuttles run to almost every inch of Disney World. Bus Hack: In the evenings, ALWAYS ask at your resort what time the shuttles start operating to the theme park or destination you want to go to the next morning. Be at the shuttle drop-off/pick-up area 20-30 minutes before the time they tell you. I am 99.9% sure you will see shuttles start arriving before stated start time. Note: Buses/shuttles do not operate from resort to resort.*

  3. Monorail: The Monorail services 3 resorts (The Grand Floridian, The Polynesian, and The Contemporary) and 2 theme parks (Magic Kingdom and EPCOT) Monorail hack: After the Fireworks at Magic Kingdom either leave a bit early or linger on Main Street to avoid long lines.

  4. Trams, Ferries: Trams will take you from the theme park parking lots to the main entrance of Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios. For Magic Kingdom the trams will take you to the Ferry or the Monorail for your choice of transportation to Main Street USA and the Magic Kingdom.

  5. Skyliner: The Skyliner is almost an attraction in and of itself. Remember the lines may look long in the mornings, but they are ALWAYS moving. Skyliner Hack: Please note that skyliner resorts (Art of Animation, Pop Century, Riviera, and Caribbean Beach have no bus/shuttle service to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios. If the Skyliner is operational that is your mode of transportation to those theme parks. My two favorite parks to Park Hop are EPCOT and Hollywood Studios… there is just a short skyliner ride between them.

  6. Water Crafts: In my opinion, these are the most relaxing way to travel around Walt Disney World. Port Orleans <—->Disney Springs. Yacht Club/Beach Club <—-> Epcot. Wilderness Lodge and Ft Wilderness <—-> Magic Kingdom and The Contemporary

  7. Ticket and Transportation Center: Located next to The Polynesian, this hub will have buses to almost everywhere on the property. *Resort <—->Resort hack: If your plan is to hop from one resort to another, don’t hold out for a direct ride. Instead, follow this simple strategy:

    1. Identify the resort you want to visit

    2. Head to the nearest theme park stop served by bus from your resort (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or Animal Kingdom).

    3. Transfer there to a bus heading to your target resort.

This method works every time: Resort A → Park → Resort B. Just plan for a little extra travel time! And that brings us to my favorite transportation hack:

  8. Lyft Minnie Vans: For guests looking for a quicker, more direct way to get around, Lyft Minnie Vans offer a premium transportation option within Walt Disney World. These cheerful red-and-white polka-dotted vehicles are operated by Disney Cast Members through the Lyft app and can take you anywhere on Disney property, including resort-to-resort trips that buses don’t cover directly. They're especially helpful when you’re short on time, have dining reservations at another resort, or want to skip multiple transfers. While they come at an additional cost, the convenience and door-to-door service can be well worth it for some guests—especially families with young kids, since Minnie Vans are equipped with car seats upon request.

As a Disney travel advisor, I can also help you arrange transportation to and from MCO and Sanford airports, to and from Universal Studios and other Orlando Attractions, and transportation to and from Port Canaveral for your Disney Cruise Vacation.
